Timothy F. Fitzgerald (March 21, 1926 - December 20, 2009) 
Timothy F. Fitzgerald, 83, of 6 Binney St., Newport, died Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Helen C. (McMahon) Fitzgerald. Born in Newport on March 21, 1926 he was the son of the late Francis “Frank” and Catherine (Lynch) Fitzgerald.
Tim was a graduate of the former De La Salle Academy, class of 1943. In 1944, Tim enlisted in the U.S. Army, served with the 43rd Infantry Division, and was stationed in the Philippines from January to September of 1945. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for his service. He then went on to Japan with the 1st Calvary. After World War II, he became a member of the Newport Fire Department, retiring 28 years later with the rank of Lieutenant.
He was a longtime member of the Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club in Middletown and the Dennis E. Collins Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division #1. He was also a parishioner of St. Augustin’s Church.
Besides his wife Helen of 61 years, he is survived by his children, Timothy Fitzgerald, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Narragansett, Susan Greene and her husband Joseph of Virginia Beach, VA; Catherine Moore and her husband William of Napa, CA and Clare Garcia and her husband Peter of Newport; his grandchildren: Timothy III, Kelly and Kerry Fitzgerald; Meredith, Joseph and Catherine Greene; Shannon and Christopher Moore; Stella and Pierson Garcia and 3 great-grandchildren, Ava Greene and Lucas and Andrew Fitzgerald; and a sister Mary Fitzgerald Eddy of Greensborough, NC.
He was the father of the late Andrew J. Fitzgerald and the brother of the late Francis, Edward and William Fitzgerald, and Catherine Fitzgerald O’Connell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 23, at 10am, in St. Augustin’s Church, Carroll Ave, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Ln, Middletown will follow.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, December 22, from 4-7pm in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport.
