James C. Maher, 75, of Sanderling Way, Middletown, died March 5, 2010 at the Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Betty Maher. Born in Edenderry, County Offaly, Ireland on December 19, 1934, he was a son of the late Stephen and Theresa (OíBrien) Maher.

Jim came to the United States in the 1960ís, spending most of his working life in the insurance business as an underwriter before retiring in 2001. He was a parishioner and daily communicant of St. Augustinís Church in Newport and a member of the Dennis E. Collins Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division #1.

Besides his wife of 40 years, he leaves his daughter Maureen Maher of Durham, CT; a brother Michael Maher and his wife Marie of County Kildare; a sister Cecelia Colgan and her husband Sean of Edenderry, Ireland; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10am in St. Augustinís Church, Carroll Ave, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brownís Ln, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, from 2-5pm in the OíNeill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI.
