NEWPORT - George M. "Mike" Hamill, 48, of 81 Amesbury Circle, Middletown, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 27, 2005 at the Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Jean M. (Camara) Hamill.

Born on June 27, 1956, Mike was a son of Pauline (Bowley) Hamill of Newport and the late George "Red" Hamill.

He was a 1975 graduate of Rogers High School. In 1977 he and his high school sweetheart Jean were married. They have lived in Newport and moved to Middletown over 15 years ago, where they raised their children.

After graduating from high school Mike began his life long career spanning 27 years with Electric Boat. He started as a welder and progressed over the years to management positions as a foreman, project manager and most recently as Area Superintendant. Electric Boat recently approved the New Light Fabrication Manufacturing Project, a multimillion dollar project that was launched under Mike's supervision and development.

Mike was dedicated to improving his skills while employed at Electric Boat by taking continuing education classes at night through the Community College of Rhode Island.

He and his wife were communicants of St. Lucy's Church in Middletown for the past 15 years, where they were Eucharistic ministers.

Mike was a member of many local organizations: Viking Riders All Vets Club of Middletown, Fraternal Order of Police-Middletown, Dennis E. Collins Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Newport Lodge of Elks #104, Member and Past Master of the St. Johns Masonic Lodge, President of the Newport Pop Warner Football, Odd Fellows, Newport Rifle Club, and Bass Masters Association.

Besides his wife and mother he leaves a daughter Shannon M. Hamill Conklin and son-in-law Joe "ginsu-boy" Conklin of Newport, son Michael N. Hamill of Middletown; a brother Paul Hamill of Jamestown; his Aunt Rain, Uncle Skip; granddaughter Kymberlee "Kymba" Hamill Conklin; grandson Shaun "Popeye" J. Conklin; his mother-in-law Frances M. Camara; several favorite sister-in-laws; several brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son George M. Hamill Jr., granddaughter Brooklynne I. Hamill, his sister-in-law Carolyn "Carrie" Hamill.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 1, 2005, at 9:00 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI. Burial in Middletown Cemetery, Wyatt Road, Middletown. Visitation in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI on Thursday, March 31, 2005, from 4-8 p.m. In honor of Mike attendants are free to wear jeans, motorcycle related attire and HD colors.
