U.S. Veteran Emmet E. Turley, 83, of Seaside Drive, Jamestown, RI, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Hazel Belle (Kingsley) Turley, and five children:

  • Christopher P. Turley and wife Ann of Saunderstown, RI;
  • Michele E. Fogg and husband Glenn of North Kingstown, RI;
  • Maureen H. Johnson and husband Allen of Manassas, VA;
  • Kevin E. Turley and wife Diana of Simi Valley, CA; and
  • Marianne C. Turley-Moore and husband Brian of Portland, OR.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Brian, Sandra and Colleen Fogg; Nicole and Natalie Johnson; Nathan and Emma Turley, and Elliot and Alexander Moore.

Born on April 10, 1930 in Detroit, MI, to parents James and Sarah (Dempster) Turley, Emmet lived in Hornchurch, England and Belfast, Northern Ireland, during World War II. Emmet was an engineering apprentice in London prior to joining the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean War. Following the Korean War, Emmet went to school in America where he met and married his wife Hazel.

Emmet attended El Camino College in California and is an engineering graduate of Roger Williams University. Emmet worked in the defense industry for over forty years as an engineer and manager for General Electric, Northrup Grumman, Raytheon, and McLaughlin Research Corporation.

A member of the Rhode Island Republican Party, Emmet served on planning boards for the towns of Lincoln and Jamestown. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America and a URI Master Gardener. He was a member of the Dennis E. Collins Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Emmet enjoyed fishing and viewing the sunsets over Narragansett Bay with Hazel from their deck in Jamestown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, July 19, 2013 at St. Mark's Church, 58 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown, RI at 10 am. Burial will be held at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, RI. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport from 4-7pm.
